There is a toaster in my bathroom

This is a story from ten years ago and it is one of my more favorite "Cara" moments. It was one of those moments when I had to take what was a stressful situation and laugh. I think that has been one of the keys to living with autism - laughter, and a strong faith in God!

I now have a toaster in my bathroom!!!!!!

Why? You ask. One word - CARA! Well, maybe three words - Cara and autism!!!!!

A few days ago Cara developed a new obsession - the pop-up toaster. She just kept pushing the button down over and over again. Well, over the weekend Rick unplugged it so she wouldn't get hurt. We should have known that wouldn't be enough!

This morning Cara brought me a package of her Pop-Tarts to open. Nothing unusual. She can't open the packages on her own so she needs help. I figured she was hungry and wanted to eat them. Wrong!!!!!!

Next thing I know, I smell toasting Pop-Tart!! Then I hear the toaster pop up and Cara push the button back down. I was in that kitchen fast!!!!! But when I got there the toaster was unplugged and hot. How is that possible? Like Cara can't figure out how to plug something in! So I picked up the hot toaster, took the Pop-Tarts out and put the toaster in my bathroom. I couldn't think of any other place that had a surface that could handle a hot appliance and Cara couldn't reach it. She can't get past the funky doorknob cover on our bedroom door so she can't get to our bathroom. The bathroom counter seemed a relatively safe place to put the toaster. It isn't plugged in.

So, until we get some tall, Cara-proof gates for the kitchen I guess I will have to toast my Pop-Tarts in the bathroom - just not when I'm in the shower!!!!!

I just have one last thing to say - EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!
